Runelite encountered a fatal error while downloading: Quick Fix

Runescape is a rather popular MMO RPG game that was first released way back in 2001. The game was originally built as a browser-based game but has since been largely replaced by a redesigned standalone C++ client in 2016.

That said, the vanilla client has been known to cause problems for a lot of players. Alternative launchers exist and have been massively popularised because of the problems with the vanilla client but that doesn’t mean these launchers are perfect either.

In this article, we’re taking a look at Runelite, a free, open-source, old-school RuneScape client and its data errors during downloads.

Power cycle your router

Restarting your router can fix a bunch of seemingly random issues with your network, which could, in turn, be causing problems with Steam. If you don’t have internet connectivity or an active connection, you’re going to get such issues on Steam.

So try restarting your router to rule out any network issues that may be causing problems.

Check the architecture

If you’re getting uncalled for fatal errors when downloading or installing, check to see if you’ve got the right architecture installer. Your Runelite installer should be 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) depending on your Windows, Linux or macOS installation.

Replace your configuration files

A major cause of this error is the Runelite file returning either no content or malformed content. Deleting the file and running the game again or replacing the file with a proper file can potentially fix the issue. Do keep in mind that you’ll lose some of your settings and configurations, however.

Reinstall from the right source

If nothing else works, you should remove all RuneScape-related things from your PC and download Runelite again from That’s the official website for the Runelite client with the latest release version 1.8.31 at the time of writing. You’ll also be able to see the latest commits and bug fixes to the project and keep track of any other errors that you might be facing.
