Hearing loss due to exposure to high decibel levels has been on the rise as years go by, although this is a small portion of the causes as reported by the WHO, it is something that can be prevented if proper measures are taken. An essential step in this direction would be to limit the maximum volume your mobile device can output, and Apple has included options within their software to make this possible.

How to limit the maximum volume on your iPhone, iPad or iPod
To limit the maximum volume on your device, follow the steps mentioned below:
- Open the Settings application on your device.
- Scroll down to the bottom where you will find the Music section alongside other options related to Apple TV, Photos and more.
- Tap on Music and then on Volume Limit under the Playback section.
- The Max Volume slider will appear; adjust it according to your wish.

Limiting the max volume with restrictions
Now, if the device happens to belong to your child or if you are planning on buying them one this holiday season, you may also want to set a restriction on this setting. This will allow you to ensure that they are not blasting music at levels that can harm their hearing. If you’re a parent and would like to restrict your kid’s control over the maximum volume settings, follow the steps mentioned below.
- Go back to the main page of the Settings application.
- Now select the section called Screen Time.
- Locate Content & Privacy Restriction and select this option.
- Scroll down to the Allow Changes subsection and change the Volume Limit setting option to Don’t Allow.
This will make the option to move the slider ineffective, thus allowing the limit not to be changed unless permitted by a preset passcode.
Things to keep in mind
- If you happen to have a device that is running an older version of iOS that does not monitor screen time, you can find the option for Restrictions under the General subsection.
- If you happen to use headphones or earphones, you may want to configure this while having those plugged in as this will ensure that the volume they output is controlled.
