Viewing the active status of someone on the Instagram app is pretty simple; the app displays a green dot below the icon of their profile picture in your Instagram DMs, which confirms that they are active for messaging.
But, that is not all Instagram also sometimes displays the Active Today status, which means that the person has not been active over the app for the last 8-24 hours.

What is the difference between Active Today and Active Yesterday?
The Active Today status on Instagram depicts the fact that the person has not been active on the app for the last 8-24 hours.
As long as people do not use Instagram for more than eight hours, the app by default shows the Active Today status below their name in the Instagram DMs.
If a person has been Active before hitting the eight active hours mark, their active status will show as “Active X hours ago”. As someone passes the time frame of 24 hours and isn’t active over the app for the last 48 hours, their active status would show Active Yesterday.
But, it is to be kept in mind that the last active status on Instagram is not entirely reliable, and you might not be able to see the active status of someone on the app if they have restricted their Active Now setting.

How to hide your active status on Instagram?
You can choose to restrict the display of your active status on Instagram by following the steps mentioned below:
- Tap on the profile icon on the bottom right of your screen.
- Tap on the three horizontal lines on the top right corner of your screen.
- Tap on the Settings option.
- Choose the Privacy setting.
- Scroll down to the Activity status option in the Interactions menu.
- Disable the Show activity status slider.
