Apple is preparing to introduce a new app named ‘Passwords’ at its upcoming Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) next week to allow Apple and Windows users to manage their login information across multiple devices. This development is aimed at countering password managers such as 1Password and LastPass.
First reported by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the forthcoming Passwords app will build upon iCloud Keychain’s foundation, allowing users to save and sync their passwords across iPhone, iPad, and Vision Pro devices, but with enhanced organisation and functionality.
Users can expect their logins to be categorised into various segments such as accounts, WiFi networks, and passkey, making the management of credentials more intuitive and streamlined.
One of the most notable advancements with the Passwords app is its expected support for Windows. This cross-platform compatibility is a significant expansion from Apple’s traditionally closed ecosystem, signalling a potential shift in strategy to accommodate a broader range of users. However, there has been no indication of similar support for Android users.
The Password app is slated to debut alongside iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS 15. This integration will position the app as a direct competitor to established password managers like LastPass and 1Password, offering password generation and storage features.
Additional functionalities highlighted by Gurman include autofill for usernames and passwords and the ability to create authentication codes akin to those generated by Google Authenticator.
WWDC, set for June 10th, is anticipated to be a landmark event with a plethora of new features expected to be unveiled. Among the most eagerly awaited announcements are new AI capabilities for the iPhone OS 18 and a significant overhaul of the Siri virtual assistant.
Although Apple launched a new iPad Air, Pro, and M4 chip at the Let Loose event in May, the company has no plans of introducing a new AirTag 2 in 2024.
