Can PS4 play DVDs?

Sony’s Playstation consoles have been one of the most popular gadgets in their market since the turn of the century, which saw the release of PS2 — a game-changing entry into the gaming market that changed the fortunes of Sony in the gaming industry drastically.

Although the first Playstation console was released in 1994, it wasn’t until March 2000 when the PS2 released that Sony was finally able to get one over their then-competitors Nintendo.

Since then, the console has supported compact discs (CDs) and subsequently also DVDs. Playstation 4, better known as PS4, released in November 2013 and has since been the market leader with Xbox its main rival in the gaming console space.

Much like its predecessor, PS4 can also play DVDs; however, you’ll need to enable the disc playback feature over the internet before you can do that.

You’ll only need to connect to the internet once to enable the feature and then you can play DVDs or Blu-ray Discs (BDs) offline as well without an internet connection.

Below we’ve listed all the DVD and BD formats that can play on PS4 and also the kinds of discs that aren’t supported.

A list of disc formats supported by PS4

PS4 supports the following DVDs and Blu-ray discs.

Can PS4 play DVDs? List of supported disc formats
  • DVD-ROM.
  • DVD-R/RW (AVCHD and VR mode CPRM are supported too).
  • DVD+R/RW (AVCHD is supported).
  • BD-ROM (Hybrid discs are supported).
  • BD-R/RE (BDAV, BDMV).

Keep in mind that if you’re going to continuously playback copyright-protected BDs, you might need to renew the encryption key for AACS (Advanced Access Content System.)

If you’ve got a compatible DVD or BD that’s listed above and still aren’t able to play it, that could be due to the scratches, dust or gunk on the disc, in which case you can try cleaning it with a microfiber cloth. However, this can also be caused due to the quality of the recording, in which case you can try returning and replacing the disc.

Ps4 can sometimes also have trouble playing the media in a disc due to variations in the encoding software or manufacturing process.
