Here are nine ways to fix the HBO Max ‘can’t play title’ error.

Is HBO Max down?

When encountering any HBO Max error, the first thing you should do is check if their servers are down. You can do so by visiting their social handles, checking for related trends on Twitter or using a third-party server detector to see if other people are having the same issue and if it’s an outage or just you.

If HBO Max’s servers are down, there isn’t much you can do except wait for them to resolve the issue. If everything seems ok with their service, go through the fixes below.

Restart your device

try restarting your device. Restarting any device, whether an Android, iOS device, or a computer, can fix many seemingly random issues that appear out of nowhere.

Update HBO Max app

If there’s no sign of HBO Max service disruption, check if an update is available for the app and install the update.

App updates often consist of bug fixes, which can help resolve the ‘can’t play title’ error.

Clear HBO Max app cache or reinstall the app

App cache can also often cause issues with the smooth functioning of the app, especially if there have been no app updates in a while or a new feature is clashing with the cache. Clearing cache won’t only work for phones and tabs but also for TVs, consoles and other streaming devices. If you’re streaming a browser on a PC, clearing the browser’s cache will help.

Check supported devices

HBO Max will show the ‘can’t play title’ error if you’re trying to stream a title on an unsupported device. Moreover, if you’ve got a supported device but are seeing this error when trying to play a downloaded title, chances are the download file or your device storage is corrupt. In such a case, you can try re-downloading the file or consider resetting the device to clear the storage and any files causing hindrance.

Check your internet connection

A poor internet connection can also cause HBO Max ‘can’t play title’ error. Check if your internet speed and latency are good enough. If not, restart your router or mobile internet.

Alternatively, you can also use the Airplane mode to disconnect and reconnect to the internet and refresh the connection.

Disable VPN or Proxy

Using a proxy or VPN when trying to access HBO Max can also cause the ‘can’t play title’ error. Disable your VPN and try reconnecting.

If you’re streaming HBO Max from outside the localities where it’s currently available — US, some US territories, some countries in Latin America, Europe and the Caribbean — you might also see the ‘can’t play title’ error.

If you’re in the country where it’s available, disable VPN or proxy connection and if you’re streaming from another country, make sure your VPN is using a server in a country where HBO Max is available.

Contact your ISP

If you’re not using a VPN and reside in one of the countries where HBO Max is available, there is a possibility that your Internet Service Provider is blocking access to the HBO Max and its titles.

You can contact your ISP, and if all is well on their end, you can move to the last resort.

Contact HBO support

If nothing has worked so far, your last resort is to contact HBO Max’s customer support. You can visit the HBO Max help centre here.
