Use Custom Filter to delete unread emails in Gmail

Swipe down the messages of one or two months which mostly are needed. Once you’ve made sure that you’ve read all your important emails, here’s what to do to delete all the unread emails on Gmail in a matter of minutes:

Step 1:  Open your Gmail account on a web browser and go to the inbox.

Step 2: Press the Gear (settings) icon, located at the top-right corner of the inbox..

From the drop-down menu, click the See all settings button.

Step 3: Now select the Filters and blocked addresses option and tap on Create a new filter button under the selected option’s menu.

Step 4: A pop-up window will appear; here, type label:unread beside Include the words. Then, click on Create filter and confirm by clicking on OK.

Step 5: Next, you’ll be presented with a few options. To delete all unread emails, check the box next to Delete it and the one next to Apply filter to matching conversations to delete all unread emails.

Step 6: Finally, to confirm, click on the Create filter button.

It’s important to mention that this will delete your unread emails as soon as they appear. If you leave the filter on, each time you receive an email, it will get deleted automatically.

So, remember to delete the filter once it’s no longer needed. To do so, open your Gmail inbox page, then go to Gear (settings) icon > see all settings > filter and blocked addresses (Steps 2 and 3 mentioned above).

Then you will see the filter named as label:unread in the menu. Mark the filter selected, click on the Delete button next to it, and follow along with the next prompt.

Use Gmail label to delete unread emails in Gmail

If you don’t want to waste any time creating and deleting Gmail filters and need a more convenient way, use Gmail labels to delete all unread emails at once.

Step 1: Type label:unread in the search bar (Filter searches containing “label:”, “in:”, “is:”, date range; meaning you can also type is:unread or in:unread).

Step 2: All the unread messages will be filed. Then press the down arrow on the select button. Once all the messages are highlighted, select all conversations that match this search button above the list.

Step 3: Click the Trash Can icon on the activity panel.

Step 4: On the pop-up window, confirm the deletion by clicking the OK button.

What is more impressive is that Google gives further filtering options. All the unread messages will appear with a bar at the top as you type the search code. This bar will help you sort out unread messages by week, month, year and so on with the help of the custom range option.

You can also choose to view messages from a particular person or entity whose unread messages you want to delete.

How to delete meassages from Trash in Gmail?

Once you have deleted a message, it will be moved to the trash bin. They will be automatically deleted from here after 30 days. But if you want to delete all messages from your Trash Bin right now. Then follow the steps mentioned below.

Step 1: Go to your inbox trash bin. As the trash folder opens, click on the Empty Bin now button in blue colour at the top.

Step 2: At last, hit the OK button on the pop-up menu.
