How to exit a book on Kindle?

The Kindle is an eReader introduced by Amazon in 2007. It is a digital device with a screen primarily for reading eBooks and other digital materials.

Besides the power on and off, most of the latest Kindle models have no visible buttons to navigate the device. Functions like opening the menu, selecting a book, flipping pages, and changing the font size are performed through touch gestures.

Exit a book on the Kindle device

Once you are done reading and want to exit the book, here’s what you do:

Step 1: Tap on the top of the screen.

Step 2: In the menu that appears, tap on the back arrow toward the left of the menu or the Home Screen icon next to the back arrow.

If you cannot see a back button in the top menu, switching off and switching on your Kindle or restarting it by long pressing the power button and selecting the Screen-Off or Restart option should resolve the issue.

Exit a book on the Kindle app on Android or iOS

Here’s how to exit a book on the Kindle app for Android and iOS.

  • Step 1: From an open book page, tap on the centre of the screen.
  • Step 2: Choose the back arrow toward the left in the top menu. It may be a downward arrow on some devices.

This will take you to your last opened page. For instance, if you open the book from your Home Screen, you will be led there. If you open the book from your Library, that is the screen you will land on.

Exit a book on the Kindle app on your laptop or desktop

The interface is slightly different on the desktop app. On the home screen, the menu bar is located to the left. The top right corner of the screen has additional dropdowns like File, View, Tools and Help.

To open a book, click on Library. Double-tap the cover you want to read. Or click on the three dots under a book and select Open book. Once you’re done reading, follow these steps to exit the book:

If you’re not in full-screen mode, the menu should be available on the top left corner of your screen.

Method 1: Click on the Library button on the top left. This will take you back to the library page where you can see all your books.

Method 2: Alternatively, click on File at the top-right corner. In the drop-down that appears, select Close Book.

How to exit full screen mode

To enter full-screen mode, press F11 or click on the full-screen icon (4 outward arrows) on the top menu.

If you are in full-screen mode where no menu is visible, press the F11 key to exit the full screen. Or press the Esc (Escape) key.

If the shortcut doesn’t work on your laptop, do this instead:

  • Step 1: Drag your cursor to the bottom of the screen until a pop-up appears.
  • Step 2: Tap the x icon to exit the full-screen mode.
