The process to return to the home screen might vary depending upon the model and generation of your Kindle eReader.
For some of the older Kindle Paperwhites, there is a home icon in the top menu bar. For the newer versions, a back button takes you to the library or home screen, where you can find Library and Home options at the bottom. This article will walk you through how to return to the home screen on Kindle in both scenarios.
Returning to the home screen on older Kindles
The Kindle Paperwhite 5th Gen has a top menu bar that displays the home icon. Apart from when you have a book open, the top menu bar is constantly visible. To return to the home screen from any other page, for instance, the Settings menu, tap the home icon.
If you have a book open, follow these steps to go back to the home screen:
Step 1: Tap toward the top of the screen.

Step 2: In the pop-up menu that appears at the top, tap the home icon.

Returning to the home screen on newer Kindles
If you are on the Kindle Store page or the Settings menu and want to go back to the home screen, click on the X to close the tab and press the back arrow to take you to the home screen. If you have a book open, this is how you can go back to the home screen:
- Step 1: Tap toward the top of the screen.
- Step 2: In the menu at the top, select the back arrow. Depending on whether you opened the book from the home screen or the library, the back button will take you to that page.
- Step 3: If the back button leads to the library page, tap on Home at the bottom of the page.
Returning to the home screen on the Kindle mobile app
The menu is located at the bottom of the page for the Kindle mobile app. If you are on any other page apart from an open book, all you have to do is tap the home screen icon from the bottom.
If you have a book open, do this:
Step 1: Tap toward the top of the page.
Step 2: Press the back arrow in the pop-up menu that appears at the top.
Step 3: If you haven’t opened the book from the home screen, the back arrow will take you to the last accessed page.

Step 4: From there, select Home from the bottom menu to go to the home screen.

If you are using the desktop app, note that there is no home option.
