How to react to messages on Instagram?

Instagram has come a long way from the photo-sharing app it once was. Following its acquisition by Facebook, the platform has seen new features and updates at a breakneck speed.

One of these updates was merging the Instagram DM system with Facebook’s Messenger. This merge has brought features to DMs that weren’t there before, for example, reacting to messages.

In this article, we’re taking a look at how to react to messages on Instagram.

Instagram Message reactions

Reacting to a particular message on Instagram is relatively easy. All you have to do is tap and hold the message, and you’ll see a list of six emojis to chose from as your reaction.

Now you can either tap the emoji to send a quick reaction or tap and hold them to increase the intensity of the reaction. This feature has been borrowed as it is from Facebook’s Messenger.

How to customise Instagram reactions?

Just follow these steps if you want to send a custom reaction that isn’t in the list of the six emojis showing up.

  • Tap and hold the message you want to react to, when the emoji list opens up press the plus icon.
  • Scroll and find the emoji you want to react with. 

Note that these will be one-off custom reactions. If you want to customise the emojis in the reaction bar, here’s how.

  • Tap and hold the message you want to react to, when the emoji list opens up press the plus icon.
  • Tap Customise in front of Your Reactions. 
  • Tap the emoji you want to replace and then tap the new emoji you want there instead. 
  • Tap the tick icon in the top right.

Note that the first emoji in the list is your double-tap emoji. By default, it’s the famous Instagram heart, but you can customise it to your preference.
