Why do you see error 797?
If you’re seeing “error 797: a connection to the remote access server was not made because the modem was not found”, it is primarily because the PC cannot establish a connection with your internet service provider (ISP). This error is common in Windows PC, especially when using wireless internet USB dongles.
Other than that, it could also be caused due to an outdated or improperly installed or a faulty or loose ethernet/USB connection.

7 ways to fix error 797
Here are seven ways to fix “error 797: a connection to the remote access server was not made because the modem was not found”.
Restart your computer and modem
One of the most common fixes to almost any tech issue is a simple restart. Restart your laptop/PC and the router or modem to see if that quickly fixes the problem.
If not, you can also power drain the modem and then hit restart. To power drain, disconnect the modem/router from any power source for at least 15-20 seconds and then power it back on.

Update the drivers
Since the leading cause of this error 797 is your device driver failing, updating the driver at fault is the best shot at fixing the problem.
Step 1: Right-click Start and select Device Manager from the menu.

Step 2: Locate the driver you want to update, right-click on it and click on Update Drivers.

Step 3: Click on Search automatically for drivers. Windows will automatically look for and download the latest drivers for your hardware.

While this should help resolve error 797. If it doesn’t, click Uninstall device and restart your PC to force Windows to install the required drivers. You can then update them later.
Reset the driver verifier
Resting the Windows driver verifier can also help fix error 797.
Step 1: Press the Windows key + R to open the Run prompt. Type cmd and hit enter.

Step 2: Type the following command and hit enter.
verifier/reset

Now restart your PC, and error 797 should’ve been resolved.

Check network adaptor power options
Incorrect or inconsistent power to your network adaptor can also cause this error 797.
Step 1: Right-click Start and select Device Manager from the menu.

Step 2: Find your network adaptor and double click it to open its properties.

Step 3: Head over to the Power Management tab and uncheck the Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power option.

Run the Windows hardware troubleshooter
Windows 10 comes with a few handy troubleshooters that can resolve many issues. However, for some reason, Microsoft has removed the hardware troubleshooter from the troubleshooter’s menu. So here’s an alternative way to run the hardware troubleshooter.
Step 1: Press the Windows key + R to open the Run prompt. Type cmd and hit enter.

Step 2: Type msdt.exe -id DeviceDiagnostic and press enter. This will launch the hardware troubleshooter.

Proceed along as instructed by the troubleshooter.

Try modifying the registry
The first thing you can do is modify the registry to force Windows to connect to Microsoft’s servers to fetch the updates. Here’s how.
Step 1: Press the Windows key + R to open the Run prompt. Type regedit and hit enter.

Step 2; Navigate to the following directory
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\AU\

Step 3: Find the UseWUServer key, double-click it, and change it to 0.

Now restart your PC and try again.
Disable IPv6
If you’re running IPv6, it can sometimes cause error 797 when connecting to servers. Here’s how to fix the situation.
Step 1: Press the Windows key and search for Network settings. Click on the corresponding search result.

Step 2: Click on Change adaptor settings.

Step 3: Double click your active connection.

Step 4: Click on Properties.

Step 5: Ensure the IPv6 box is unchecked and the IPv4 box is checked instead.

Restart your PC and try again.
