Minecraft’s randomly generated infinite world can be a handful to navigate, especially considering the game doesn’t provide any map or direction guidance to the players. However, it has hundreds, if not thousands, of crafting options, including maps you can use to navigate the world.
Maps can be very helpful in Minecraft, but they’re a hassle to craft as the elements required to craft a map can be difficult to acquire. In this article, we’re going over everything you need to know to craft a map in the game. You can watch the video below or continue reading the guide in the article.

Crafting maps in Minecraft
Before you get to crafting a map, you’re going to need the following items.
- 9 x Paper: This can be created by harvesting sugarcane and using a crafting table to turn it into paper.
- 1 x Compass: Made using four iron ingots and redstone dust.
Here are the steps you need to follow.
Step 1: The first step is to get paper for your map. This can be done by gathering sugarcane and crafting paper using the following pattern at a crafting table.

Step 2: Once your paper is ready, create a compass. To craft a compass, place four iron ingots and redstone dust in the pattern shown below at a crafting table.

Step 3: Now that you have your paper and compass, head to your crafting table and use the following pattern to create a map.

Once your map is generated, it’ll be empty. As you walk around and explore the world, the map will slowly start showing everything around you. Remember that basic Minecraft maps like the one we just crafted cover only 128 x 128 blocks. Using the pattern below, you can expand your maps by combining them with eight papers.

There are other ways to get maps in Minecraft as well. For starters, if you’re playing the Bedrock edition of the game, you can enable the Starting Map slider when creating a new world to start with a map already present in your inventory. Alternatively, you can purchase maps for eight emeralds or find them in sunken ships, stronghold libraries, and cartographers’ chests.
Last, you can also craft maps using a cartography table. This only requires one paper if you’re looking to generate an empty map. If you want an empty locator map, combine a paper and compass at a cartography table.
