How to schedule a message in Slack?

Being able to schedule messages on Slack is a fantastic feature, especially if you often forget to send important reminders or need to communicate with others at specific times.

Why schedule messages on Slack?

There are numerous scenarios where scheduling messages on Slack can be beneficial:

  • If you are communicating with teams across the world in different time zones.
  • Set reminders for team members or yourself.
  • Send messages when there is a high chance that the team member will view them. For example, many people have a habit of checking their Slack channels after or before lunch break.

Scheduling Slack messages on desktop and app

Now that we have understood the benefits of scheduling messages on Slack, let’s move forward with the steps.

On desktop

Step 1: Open Slack and go to the group or individual you want to message. Type your message and then click on the downward arrow next to the send button to schedule the message. You can choose Slack’s recommended options or select Custom time if you prefer.

Step 2: Next, select the date that you want the message to deliver and also select the time. Once you’re done, press Schedule Message.

On app

  • Open Slack and then type your message. Now, long-tap on the send message icon at the bottom right of the screen.
  • Next, select Custom time.
  • After that, select the date and time and when you’re done, tap on Schedule message.

Editing and managing scheduled messages

Once you’ve scheduled a message, you might need to make changes. Here’s how to manage your scheduled messages on Slack:

On computer

Head to the Drafts and Sent option from the left panel and then hover the mouse over the scheduled message to see the list of options. Slack provides the following options after you have scheduled messages: Edit message, Reschedule message, Send message, Cancel schedule and save to draft, and Delete message.

  • To edit your scheduled messages, press the inverted pen icon and then perform the edit. Once you are done, click on the tick mark icon to schedule the message at the same date and time that you had done earlier. Otherwise, press the downward arrow to send the message now or send it to drafts.
  • To reschedule the message, select the second option to land on the same set of options that we’ve seen in Step 2 earlier.
  • To send the message immediately, click on the third option.
  • To cancel the scheduled message, click on the three-dot button, select Cancel schedule and save to drafts. This will cancel the schedule and you can see the message in the Draft tab.
  • To delete the message, click on the three-dot button and then select Delete message.

On app

  • Open Slack, and then tap on the Draft and Sent tab at the top.
  • Now, head to the Scheduled tab at the top and long-press the scheduled message to see the set of options. On the Slack app too, you’ll get: Edit message, Send now, Reschedule message, Cancel schedule and save to edits, and Delete messages options.

The options work the same way as we have seen in the above sub-section. That is, for editing the scheduled messages, press the Edit message option. If you want to reschedule your already scheduled message, select the Reschedule message option.

To cancel the scheduled message, use the Cancel schedule and save to drafts option and to delete the message entirely, tap the Delete message option.
