Error codes signify a particular problem in an application. Each error code corresponds to a unique set of problem. In this article, we will deal with Error 491. This error occurs in the Google Play app when you are trying to download or update an app. The error message is somewhat like this: ‘The app’ could not be downloaded due to an error. (491).

How to fix Error 491?
There are various ways by which you can fix the error. We will explain some of the ways through which you can fix the error.
Restart your device
Sometimes just restarting the device can solve the error. This should be the first step that you should try and proceed to the other steps only when restarting isn’t resolving the problem.

Clear Google Play data as well as cache
To clear the cache, follow the instructions given below.
- Go to the Apps & notifications, click on See all apps and then select Google Play store.
- Now tap on Storage.
- On the next page, find and tap on Clear Cache and Clear Storage.

Uninstall the updates
To uninstall the updates, follow the steps given below.
- Go to the Settings of your device and then tap on Apps & notifications.
- Search for Google Play store.
- Tap on the three-dot menu at the top-right of the display.
- Tap on Uninstall updates from the drop-down menu.
- Select OK to confirm.
This will uninstall all the updates to the Google Play store. Start the app again — the problem must have resolved by now.

Removing and then re-adding your Google Account
This is another method by which you can solve the error. To delete the account, follow the steps given below.
- Go to Settings of your phone.
- Scroll to the bottom and tap on Accounts.
- Here, you will see various apps where you have signed in. Select the relevant Google account from the list of apps.
- On the next page, tap on Remove account.
This will remove the Google account from the app. After removing the account, follow the above procedure again to add the account.
Note: Sometimes, to fix the error, you may have to login from another of your Google account. Deleting the account won’t delete the data.

Resetting app preferences
To reset app preferences, follow the method given below.
- Go to the Settings of your device.
- Go to Apps & notifications.
- Tap on the three-dot menu at the top right corner.
- Select Reset app preferences from the drop-down menu.
- Then confirm the process by pressing Reset apps option.
Resetting app preferences will not delete your data.

Performing factory reset
Factory reset must be the last option that you should try. To do a factory reset, follow the instructions given below.
- Go to Settings of your device.
- Scroll to the bottom and tap on System.
- On the next page, tap on Reset options.
- Back up your data first and then tap on Erase all data (Factory reset).
Note: Factory reset will delete all your data. Hence, we highly recommend you to backup the data first.
