OpenAI’s ChatGPT is one of the best AI-powered chatbots out there. That said, since its release, a huge number of users and developers have flocked to the ChatGPT website to try the new tool out. Naturally, this has caused problems for some people who can’t access the site intermittently.

In this article, we’re talking about the ChatGPT internal server error, its causes and what you can do to fix the problem.

What causes this error?

The error is mainly caused by overloaded servers when the site handles a lot of traffic. That said, other possible causes include the following:

  • The answer to your input prompt is too large.
  • Internet connectivity issues.
  • You’re not logged in with your OpenAI account.

How to fix this error?

Here are three fixes you can try out.

Log into OpenAI

If this is your first time using ChatGPT, keep in mind you need an OpenAI account in order to use any of their online AI-bots, including ChatGPT. Once you’ve made an OpenAI account, log into the website and try using ChatGPT again.

Check OpenAI’s server

Another thing you should do is check to see if OpenAI’s server are online. As mentioned before, server overcrowding can often lead to errors like this. You can head over to OpenAI’s server status page or use a third-party site like Downdetector.

Try a shorter prompt

One possible reason for this error is also that the prompt you entered requires too much computational power which might not be available at the time. Try using a shorter or easier prompt to see if that works or try again sometime later.

Clear your browser’s data

Corrupt files in your cache or otherwise can cause this error as well. Clear them out to see if you can get Chrome to work.

Step 1: Type in chrome://settings/clearBrowserData in your browser’s address bar and hit Enter.
