How to fix the Windows Photo Viewer: Not enough memory issue?

Run the Windows App troubleshooter

Step 1: Press the Windows key and search for Troubleshooters. Click the corresponding search result.

Step 2: Click on Additional Troubleshooters.

Step 3: Scroll down and run the Windows Apps Troubleshooter.

Restart and try again. The Windows Photo Viewer Not enough memory error should be fixed.


Reset the program

Try resetting the program to check if it’s working. 

Step 1: Press Windows key + X and click on Apps and Features.

Step 2: Find Photos in the list and click on Advanced Features.

Step 3: Click on the Reset button to reset the program.

Restart your PC and try again.

Reinstall the program

If resetting didn’t help, try removing the program and installing it again to see if that resolves your issue. 

Step 1: Press Windows key + X and click on Apps and Features.

Step 2: Find Photos in the list and click Uninstall.

Now reinstall the program from the Microsoft Store and check if that resolves the Windows Photo Viewer Not enough memory issue.

Run an SFC Scan

Corrupt files are the number one reason your PC might behave weirdly. Here’s how you can get rid of them and potentially resolve your issue. 

Step 1: Press Windows Key + S to bring up the Cortana/Search box and search for Powershell. Open Windows Powershell from the search results.

Step 2: Type sfc /scannow to scan your system for issues.

Step 3: If the SFC scan finds any problems, use the following command to resolve them. 

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Restart your PC, and the problem should be gone. 


Reset Colour Management settings

Resetting Colour Management settings can also sometimes get the Photo Viewer up and running. 

Step 1: Press the Windows key and search for Advanced Display. Click the corresponding search result.

Step 2: Click Display adapter properties for Display 1. If you have multiple displays, make sure to select your primary display first.

Step 3: Head over to the Colour Management tab and click Colour Management…

Step 4: Check the Use my settings for this device checkbox and click Profiles. Select the Reset my settings to the system defaults option.

Now restart your PC and try again.

Decrypt the photos

Some files might be encrypted for security reasons. Decrypting them can help the Photo Viewer show them as expected. 

Step 1: Right-click your image file and select Properties.

Step 3: Uncheck the Encrypt contents to secure data checkbox.

Update your PC 

Another thing you should do is to update your PC. Updating your PC will, in most cases, update your programs as well and fix any issues in the process.

Disable inheritance

Although rare, disabling inheritance can help you get rid of the error. 

Step 1: Right-click your image file and select Properties.

Step 2: Head over to the Security tab and click Advanced.

Step 3: Click the Disable inheritance button.
